Gangotri Dham is a sacred pilgrimage site dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Gangotri is considered one of the origin points of the holy River Ganga (Ganges) and is one of the four shrines of the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Gangotri Temple is located on the left bank of the Bhagirathi River in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of approximately 3,100 meters above sea level.
According to Hindu mythology, the Ganges River descended from heaven to earth at Gangotri, when Lord Shiva released the mighty river from his matted locks to lessen its force. This divine event marks Gangotri as one of the most spiritually significant locations in India.
Surrounded by majestic mountains and pristine natural beauty, Gangotri Dham is situated in a calm and revered environment. Every year, thousands of pilgrims visit to seek the blessings of Goddess Ganga. TIt is believed that the Gangotri Temple was built by General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century. The Gangotri Temple opens every year on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, which usually falls in the last week of April. On the opening day, the temple is beautifully decorated with flowers, and the idol of Goddess Ganga (in a doli or palanquin) is ceremoniously brought to the temple amidst grand celebrations and Vedic rituals.
The closing date of Gangotri Temple generally falls in October or November, typically a day or two after Diwali, on the occasion of Govardhan Puja or Bhai Dooj. After the temple closes for the winter season, it remains inaccessible due to heavy snowfall in the region. During this period, the idol of Goddess Ganga is shifted to Mukhba village, near Harsil, which serves as her winter abode for the next six months, allowing devotees to continue their worship there.
The Yamunotri Dham welcomes devotees from 30 Apr 2025.
