Badrinath Dham is a sacred pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located in the town of Badrinath, in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Badrinath Temple is situated at an elevation of 3,100 meters above sea level. The Badrinath Temple, also known as Badrinarayan Temple or Vishal Badri the largest among the five Badris, which are some of the most revered shrines in Hinduism.
Badrinath Temple is one of the Char Dham sites of India and also part of the Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Badrinarayan Temple holds immense religious and mythological significance. According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated at this site, and to protect him from the harsh weather, Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri (berry) tree, hence the name "Badrinath."
It is believed that the Badrinath temple was originally established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th or 9th century. Every year, pilgris from all over the country visit this temple to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu and experience the divine spiritual experience of this Himalayan destination.
The opening date of Badrinath Temple is announced every year on the occasion of Basant Panchami. Generally, the temple opens in the last week of April or the first week of May. On the opening day , the Badrinath Dham is beautifully decorated, and thousands of pilgrims gather to witness the grand ceremony.
The closing date of the Badrinath Temple is usually scheduled after Diwali, typically in late October or early November. The Badrinath Dham remains closed during the winter season for six months due to harsh weather and heavy snowfall in the region, making it inaccessible to pilgrims. During this winter closure, the deity of Lord Badri is shifted to the Yog Dhyan Badri Temple in Pandukeshwar, which becomes the winter seat of worship for the next six months.
