Yamunotri Temple is situated 3,293 meters above sea level in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the four sacred shrines of the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand and is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. According to Hindu mythology, Yamunotri is considered the source of the River Yamuna.
The Yamunotri temple is around 6 kilometers away from Janki Chatti, and pilgrims can walk there or use a palki or pony to get there. To seek the blessings of Goddess Yamuna each year, thousands of devotees came to visit Yamunotri Dham.
In the 19th century, Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal re-constructed the Yamunotri Temple. The shrine holds profound mythological and cultural significance. Goddess Yamuna, believed to be the daughter of the Sun God Surya and sister of Yama, the God of Death, is worshipped as a symbol of purity. Pilgrims customarily bathe in the nearby natural hot springs before entering the temple, as the ritual is believed to purify the soul.
The Yamunotri Temple opens every year on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, which usually falls in the last week of April or the first week of May. On the opening day, the temple is beautifully adorned with flowers, and the idol of Goddess Yamuna is brought to the temple in a grand procession from her winter seat.
The Yamunotri Temple closes in October or November, typically on the occasion of Bhai Dooj, which is two days after Diwali. After the closure, the temple remains inaccessible due to heavy snowfall during the winter months, and the idol is moved to Kharsali village, where devotees can continue their worship throughout the winter season.
The sacred Yamunotri Dham Yatra begins on 30 Apr 2025.
