From Rishikesh or Haridwar, frequent bus services, private taxis, and shared cabs operate during the Char Dham Yatra season, connecting travelers to Sonprayag, the last motorable point near Kedarnath. The road journey from these towns to Sonprayag covers approximately 203-228 km and offers stunning views of valleys and the Himalayan landscape.

Upon reaching Sonprayag, you need to take local shared jeeps to Gaurikund, which is about 5 km away. Gaurikund is where the trek to Kedarnath Temple starts. From there, you have to trek 18 to 20 km on a clear path to reach the temple. For those unable to trek, pony rides and palki (palanquin) services are available to ease the journey.

How to reach Kedarnath by Train

There is no direct train service to Kedarnath due to its remote Himalayan location. The nearest railway stations are Rishikesh (around 207 km away) and Haridwar (about 232 km away), both of which are well-connected to major cities in India. Pilgrims are strongly advised to book helicopter tickets in advance, especially during the peak Char Dham Yatra seasons (May–June and September–October), as availability is limited and demand is high.
